A Thai costume party…

A Thai costume party

It’s Friday night and my sister is here to stay so naturally we take her to a fancy-dress party where we will be the only foreigners in the room.

We sold it to her as a ‘cultural experience’ and I’m pretty sure it was!

Because Thai parties are not like parties as you know them.

A Thai costume party!

The theme was international but no-one had ventured out of Asia except for one boy who was representing the North Pole in a Santa costume! Us foreigners opted for traditional Thai dress for extra brownie points.

The room was full of women (Matt was one of only five men – one of whom was the yoga instructor and host and another the compere) glittered and glammed to the max, sitting on round tables. they were all sipping exclusively water and nibbling at the countless plates of food that just kept coming. None of it was vegetarian of course but my costume was done up so tightly that I couldn’t have eaten it anyway.

A duo (Brunei perhaps?) took the stage for the evening and guided us through interviews, karaoke and endless games with many whoops and screams! We were obviously dragged up for the games despite not having a clue what they were! Some were innocent and fun: using just a plastic spoon in your mouth to pass plastic eggs between your team – we beat the team of girls in Chinese dress hands down!

Thai party games!

Others were more outrageous and involved balloons…

One table was laden with an array of bizarre gifts (a fan, tissue covers, prune juice…) and every now and then someone’s name would be picked out of a box and they were declared ‘Miss Lucky’ and given a gift. This happened so often that I’m pretty sure it was only Lucy and I who were not lucky.

All in all not a bad Friday night!
