Jaipur: 'The Pink City'

Jaipur got us at a bad time.

Neither of us were feeling great and we had some issues getting into our guesthouse when we arrived.
Not a good start.

We also got Jaipur at a bad time. The city is currently building a metro system which meant that large roadworks and big cranes were obscuring what should have been picturesque views of ‘The Pink City’.

It’s not that pink.

Add to that a wild goose chase for a restaurant that was not where our map said it was and you have two tired, hungry and pretty moody travelers!

But once we got some grub inside us, we had an enjoyable afternoon wandering through the markets and appreciating the (still not) pink architecture.

Here in Jaipur

The best lassi in Jaipur!

What we needed was comfort food and sleep. So that’s what we had and the next day we were all set to visit Amber Fort.

We picked up some chai and brekkie on our way to the rickety little bus. We paid our 10 rupees each and it rattled it’s way to Amber.

Amazing landscape surrounding Amber Fort

I have neither the linguistic nor photographic skills to describe the landscape around Amber. A small town surrounded by hills topped with huge walls and overlooked by two impressive forts. We loved it.

We loved Amber Fort in Jaipur!

The entrance fee was a little more than we had expected at 500 rupees per person (they should take a leaf out of Mehrangarh’s book and include an audio guide in the price) but well worth it as it was by far my favourite thing about Jaipur.

You can walk further up to Jaigarh fort but, hot and hungry we decided to head back to the town for refreshment instead.

Amber feels like a world away from the noise and traffic of Japiur. It made up for our initial disappointment and we headed back to Jaipur feeling far more positive and ready to sniff out a good thali!

So Jaipur was a bit of a mixed bag and being a bit strapped for cash at this point probably prevented us from making the most of what the city had to offer. If I were to go back I would do things differently but at the time we were just excited about our next destination…… Delhi
