Here in Jodhpur

Here in Jodhpur

As a city we didn’t enjoy Jodhpur as much Udaipur – we missed the packed winding streets that had seemed so daunting at first. We missed the endless markets and beautiful paintings on walls and doorways. I could (and we did!) spend hours wandering deeper and deeper into the maze of tea stalls and shops but in Jodhpur we very quickly left the excitement behind us and were left with back streets strewn with rubbish and worse.

We love to walk around a new city and soak up the atmosphere and that just wasn’t as enjoyable in Jodhpur. We had probably been spoiled – after all Udaipur is often called the most romantic city in India!

However, there are some really great things to do in Jodhpur and I am so glad that we went. Here are our top recommendations:

1.Mehrangarh Fort

Towering over the city, Mehrangarh is an imposing structure and inside it is no less impressive.
At 500 rupees entry it is a little more expensive than the Lonely Planet quotes (and contrary to their information you do need to purchase the ticket to enter any part of the fort.) but worth every rupee. An audio guide is included in the ticket price and is very informative.
This is one of our favourite ‘attractions’ in India and you should not leave Jodhpur without paying a visit.

2.Step Well

Hidden away in the rabbit warren streets of the city is a huge step well. It is a massive structure and like nothing I have ever seen before. During the day local boys jump off the steps and cool down in the water; at night it is lit up and music is played through speakers creating a beautifully eerie atmosphere.

3.Omellette Shop

As you exit Sardar market by the north gate, there are two omelette shops on either side of the gate. Go to the one on your right and order a masala spanish omelette with cheese. You’re welcome.

4. Saffron Lassi

Walking back through Sardar market, just before you exit through the southern gate, stop off at Mishrilal Hotel (which, as far as I could tell, is not a hotel) for a Makhaniya lassi. Just 30 rupees for a thick creamy saffron lassi that needs to be eaten with a spoon – the best we’ve had so far!

Best Lassi in Jodhpur!
