Loy Krathong

Celebrating Loi Krathong

We wrote about our first Loy Krathong last year and time has really flown by.

Along with Christmas, school holidays, Wai Kru and Sports Week; Loy Krathong is a milestone in the Thai year. Traditionally it marks the official end of the rainy season but to us it also means that Christmas is coming!

The weather is getting cooler and we will soon wish we had hot water in our flat. We have Secret Santa gifts to buy, parcels to send home and a Christmas show to prepare our students for.

All my classes were cancelled for a Kindergarten Miss Loy Krathong pageant. I don’t know how it’s relevant and I really don’t understand why the girls must wear so much (or any!) makeup but they seemed to enjoy it. Well most of them did. One poor little girl looked decidedly unimpressed.

In the evening we went down to the river Loy (float) our biodegradable bread Krathongs.

It’s a fairly low key affair but there is a good atmosphere with everyone out with friends and family to float their krathongs and let off lanterns. This rather sleepy town has a little bit of a buzz for a night!
