The Unexpected Perks of Exercise Classes

Reasons to join an exercise class abroad

After a rather long settling in period in our new town, we’ve taken up some exercise classes which have become a big part of our weekly routine. We’ve found that they are really fun and really rewarding, largely for reasons not related to exercise.

Turning up to the first session is scary, especially when you don’t speak the language and stand out like a sore thumb but we’ve found it to be worth every one of those butterflies in your tummy!

These are the 3 reasons we reckon anybody who’s moved to a new country (or even just a new town or area) should hit the local gym and sign up for some dancing, kicking, punching, or peddling.

1. Language

Going to the same place, and working with the same instructor week in, week out provides you with a great opportunity to listen to normal people speaking their language. It’s particularly good at first to pick up and practice numbers, body parts and common verbs, because most instructors will use these a lot in any class.

Then of course there’s the scary bit: speaking to people. Classes usually have a good community as the same “team” turns up every time. If somebody new comes along, people aren’t shy to say hello and we get to practice our small talk.

Obviously this doesn’t apply so much if you live in an English speaking country, but you may still be able to pick up local phrases – you could even master Scouse or Geordie!

2. Make friends

Chances are, people will be excited to see a new faces and will want to talk to you and may even invite you out for coffee. Even if you don’t socialise with them outside of the class, I’ve found that recognising a few faces around town can really help you to feel at home.

We’ve been out for dinner with our instructor and his friends, and we now both get our hair cut at a salon co-owned by two of our “classmates”. In a new place, any chance to meet new people is one worth taking.

3. Getting Involved

Living in a fun and exciting place is all well and good but it doesn’t count for much if you spend all your free time holed up in comfort at home. Checking out different places to exercise, and sticking with one, helps you feel like you’re getting your teeth into your new surroundings and making the most of them.

It adds an extra level to the post-exercise euphoria, gives you good vibes for your new town, and makes you less likely to pass on future opportunities to check out something happening nearby.
